stumble.

What is there to do in Venice? One can..Stroll down small alleys that always end up somewhere, somehow. Cross one of the 150+ birdies in the small vicinity. Buy a cool opera or carnival mask. Buy some colorful Murano glass figures and jewelry. Walk two store fronts down and see an even cooler mask and glass ring. Get a tour of the city via gondola. That pretty much sums up Venice.

Ok. As little as there may seem to be to do, each is a unique experience you can’t get anywhere else. The gondola ride is obviously a must. (Make sure to bargain!) We weren’t even looking to go on a gondola during the day but we happened to stumble upon a nice guy who gave us a great price from the get-go, which was half of what everyone else was initially charging. Was singing on the house? Of course. Was his name Marco Polo? Well, he went by it for entertainment and tourist reasons. His real name was Marco though. Going in between buildings was like walking on the street, especially when there were doors that opened up into the water.

If you are patient enough with mask and glass buying, you will find what you want. We stumbled upon a couple of authentic shops with shop owners painting masks as you talked to them.In a place where there necessarily isn’t a lot to do from a sites and guidebook standards, the best thing to do is wander. Wandering is the best way to explore. You don’t have any destinations, so you are open to see and do pretty much anything. So what is there to do in Venice? Walk around. Enjoy the people. Absorb the culture. Stumble upon a memorable experience.
